4 Types of Problem
4 Types of Problem
According to Drucker, there’s four types of problems:
Truly Generic (individual occurrence is a symptom; Two Different Kinds of Compromises)
Generic, but Unique for the individual institution
Truly exceptional, truly unique
Early manifestation of a new generic problem
sometimes it is good to re read the classics to refresh ourselves.

Highlights from the Research Project on Gratitude and Thankfulness
Highlights from the Research Project on Gratitude and Thankfulness
Dimensions and Perspectives of Gratitude
Co-Investigators: Robert A. Emmons, University of California, Davis
Michael E. McCullough, University of Miami
This is a recent study by University of California on the nature of gratitude, its causes, and its consequences. I would like to highlight some of the findings that I thought will be interesting to smart heart people.
In an experimental comparison, those who kept gratitude journals on a weekly basis exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week compared to those who recorded hassles or neutral life events (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).
• A related benefit was observed in the realm of personal goal attainment: Participants who kept gratitude lists were more likely to have made progress toward important personal goals (academic, interpersonal and health-based) over a two-month period compared to subjects in the other experimental conditions.
• A daily gratitude intervention (self-guided exercises) with young adults resulted in higher reported levels of the positive states of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness and energy compared to a focus on hassles or a downward social comparison (ways in which participants thought they were better off than others). There was no difference in levels of unpleasant emotions reported in the three groups.
• Participants in the daily gratitude condition were more likely to report having helped someone with a personal problem or having offered emotional support to another, relative to the hassles or social comparison condition.
• In a sample of adults with neuromuscular disease, a 21-day gratitude intervention resulted in greater amounts of high energy positive moods, a greater sense of feeling connected to others, more optimistic ratings of one’s life, and better sleep duration and sleep quality, relative to a control group.
• Children who practice grateful thinking have more positive attitudes toward school and their families (Froh, Sefick, & Emmons, 2008).

Have a compassionate mind.
Having a critical mind does not mean being harsh on yourself. The true secret to successful people is that they are compassionate to themselves.
.
People who are always criticising themselves do not realise they are in a judgemental mode all the time. It is fashionable now in our society to be critical to those people who we know and most of the times on people who we do not even know . [ Look at how society lap up the news of celebrities floundering and have a field time making nasty comments on them.]
The fact is people who are on permanent judgemental mode will ultimately ruin friendship by fostering unhappiness and resentment When they are judgemental of themselves they will deprive themselves of cheerfulness and distinction .
Learn to cultivate a compassionate mind . Give yourself the highest praise for even the smallest efforts and achievements. Be kind and cheerful. When you start with yourself you will progress then to be compassionate with others too and soon will pave a path to respectable friendships and successful collaborations.
Start every day to be kind to yourself and watch miracles happen in your life.

Be DIFFERENT
When you wake up in the morning, do you have a dream, maybe not as grandeur as Dr. Martin Luther King but at least a dream to achieve something or do something great or be part of something great for the country or world or humanity at large. OR you just want to go back to bed and hate the dreading day ahead?
Quickly in a few lines can you tell someone your goal with passion? Why does all this matter?
Ninety percent of people are just dreading the day ahead. When you read all the shout out of people you realise they are plodding ahead and not marching ahead to a cherished destination.
Be DIFFERENT. Have a goal to strive for. Get orderliness in your daily routine. At the end of the day be proud of your achievements for that day.
Each day is a block of brick for you to build a magnificent reality for your self based on the blueprint of your dreams.

The magic of 48 mins...
Don Crowther in his presentation at the NSA Summer Symposium, told the audience that 48 minutes is the magic number. Here’s how it works… Set a timer for 48 minutes. Close out all distractions and work continuously for 48 minutes. When the timer goes off, get up and stretch, get coffee, use the restroom etc, in the following 12 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
Don reports that this technique repeated four times a day allowed him to write a 200 page book in just two weeks. The ability to focus on one task for 48 minutes straight was the key.
Using this simple technique you may help streamline your daily activities and complete projects big or small that you have started.
What I have realised is that any technique this or any other can be successful only if you used it with discipline . So go ahead and try this method for a month and note your progress.

Resilient people shared three traits
Diane Coutu wrote in the Harvard Business Review that resilient people shared three traits –
a resolute acceptance of reality,
a sense that life is meaningful, and
an exceptional ability to improvise.
ask yourself if you were to look back at the whole of 2009 , would your life reflect those three traits... be honest with your self.
“Each indecision brings its own delays and days are lost lamenting over lost days… What you can do or think you can do, begin it. For boldness has magic, power, and genius in it.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Answer the questions below as best you can...
Answer the questions below as best you can...
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five winners of the Miss Universe.
3. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
4. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
5. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners ...
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
Easier?
The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
Why not live in a way that your name is inscribed on people's hearts...its a lot more meaningful than on marble.

Learn to turn off your internal dialogue.
If you keep talking to yourself inside your head.. your thoughts become so diluted that it loses its power to make effective decions.
When a though creeps in like a thief..catch the thought....dont react emotionally... just be aware of that thought.... Can you go just ten minutes without having a mental chatter... after the full ten minutes.. observe yourself.
You will feel energize and powerful. all this just after 10 minutes.. Just imagine what you will become after one hour.
Give it a try.. Feel the power of you will power.

Secrets of Attitude
Mental strength determines your attitude.
The greatest sportsman might not be the one with the greatest talent but must be the one with the greatest mental strength.
Success or failure is not dependent on your ability to deal with a problem.
Success or failure is dependent on your attitude towards the problem.
What is the difference?
You might have the capacity to deal with the problem but with a weak mental strength you will go about it with projecting weakness by whining and complaining and blaming others and maybe yourself for the predicament.
But the one with mental strength will see the problem as only a result and will focus on the opportunity the problem has given. He will enjoy the challenge of refining his plans towards his goals and will look forward to the results of his effort.
The one with an abundance of mental strength will inspire the people around him too.

When Things go Wrong, What do you Do?
Gordon Banks, considered the greatest goal keeper that ever lived. Who is famous for his 'Pele save'. The super goal keeper who won the world cup in 1966 by not even conceding a goal until the semi-finals (that too was a penalty).
Did you know that during his two trial games, he let in 15 goals?
When asked how he felt about it, he just said,
"I was not bothered, I just thought I'd go back and play..."
He took positive actions when things didn't go his way. So can you.
Snap out of it.
Don't give in.
Don't give up.
Don't let someone be the
final judge on you.
Always remember the
next test is on the way
Dissolve your thoughts about your mistakes.
Don't give in.
Don't give up.
Snap out of it.

The Power of Powerful Memories
When friends get together and we start talking about times when something funny happened to you and within minutes and most times, within seconds, we all will be laughing our heads off.
Our brains are trained to react to images as if they are real, even when it is not. The brain does not know the difference between imagination and reality. It only knows how to respond.
"I am the greatest; I said that even before I was...."
- Muhammad Ali
Everyone knows he is the greatest boxer.
You have to repeat and imagine you being great at what you do and it will become a reality.
Go for it. No half-hearted effort, hald-hearted measures.
Go for it.
Give it 100%
Be unbelievably dedicated.
Go for it.
What you say is what you get.
Go for it.

Can you make the things happen that need to happen?
What separates you from your success?
Many people think it is luck, being at the right place at the right time, who you know up the ladder of success. The truthful answer is that none of the above.
What then separates you from your success. What keeps it at a distant that you yearn for but cannot yet touch it?
Answer this question truthfully.
Can you make the things happen that need to happen?
You make this particular change and you will see the difference in your life. Things will start to change for the better. Think about it. You decide and then every thing begins to change for the better. What is stopping you from doing the things that you already know need to be done?
As for me, this is what I believe.
Everyone is good. The purpose of life is to make that goodness into greatness.

Fly High
Did you know that aerodynamically the bumble bee should not be able to fly? Its wings are too small to support its body weight. But, it still flies. Do you know why?The bumble bee does not know that it can’t fly.
There will always be people around you who rationally logically and sometimes aggressively tell you that you can’t fly to achieve your aim. At moments like that you must remember the bumble bee. Fly High.
Sometimes the odds are against you. Situations might seem rather impossible to overcome. At moments like that you must remember the bumble bee. Fly High.
Sometimes you do not get the attention or recognition that you deserve. Sometimes people will go out of their way to highlight the impossibility of the conditions you are in. At moments like that you must remember the bumble bee. Fly High.
Your true power is within you. Fly High.

Communication
Why is it so that when some people communicate, everyone listens and enjoy but when others communicate, people shut their mind to them?
The simple answer is when you communicate you must not fixate on the outcome by insisting on being right.
Trying to be impressive is not impressive.
Listen to the tone as well as the content of the other person with an open mind and heart.
Communicate with honesty tempered with compassion and mutual respect.

The power of routine
Does your household have a routine?
Routine allows students to blossom in a positive way. A regular routine will normalise chores, meals, tv-time, homework and allowing fun-time.
Disorganize families tend to sow habits of disorganization into the children.
Set a time-table for a week. Time to go to school, what activities to do after school, plans for the weekend, organizing meals etc.
Make the time-table a success and you will see everyone has more free-time to have fun and to nurture themselves.

What is character?
How will we behave and respond to a situation even if no one is watching us. The way we behave is determining by what we think of ourselves first and foremost.
Ask yourself, when you are alone taking a ride in the bus or taxi, when you catch yourself being alone, ask yourself, what do you think of yourself.
If we have impressed in our mind and heart that we are a great person with a wonderful personality then the way we behave will be like that of a great person with a wonderful personality.
When you see your friends misbehave or act rude, vulgar and even at times violent remember that they are behaving like that because they have impressed in their heart and mind that they are not a great person with a wonderful personality.

Balance of energy
To ensure you have enormous balance of energy you can follow these steps.
1. Get enough sleep. Teenagers need 9 1/2 hours a day.
2. When you get up-think of 3 things you are grateful for. Feel your body with that happy energy.
3. Play a game, do things that brings joy to you.
4. Avoid unnecessary/excessive talking.
5. Avoid volunteering for unnecessary tasks and do not take on more responsibilities then you can handle.

Energy and you
Every day every one of us wakes up with so much energy. We use that energy in our studies and activities throughout the day. At the end of the day we go to sleep to recharge again. The cycle continues every day in our life.
How is it then some are successful and some just manage a above average performance?
The answer is easy.
To find out who is successful you just have to look at those who are able to balance the energy throughout the day.

The beauty of Education
Henri Matisse, when he was a young painter visited his master Renoir, a renowned painter who was suffering from arthritis. While watching the old painter paint, he realised that every brush stroke Henri made, made him cry with agony. He would cringe with pain and then paint another stroke and feel the torturing razor cut like pain through his finger. He will paint again and again.
Matisse asked his master, “You have achieved so much, why do you still punish yourself by painting. The agony you go through is too much.”
Renoir smiled and said, “The pain I suffer and will pass but the beauty I create will remain forever.”
When you are pursing your studies, remember that though it may be agonising, it is not equivalent to the suffering of Renoir. The beauty of education is that it will never leave but stay with you forever.

Good student
A student asked Confucius on what makes a good student.
Confucius replied, “A person who listens to what I say and adapts my teaching to his current life, avoiding any blind obedience. A person who finds a job that buys him dignity. A person who leaves a lasting impression but does not try to be impressive."

Confucius and students
During one of their conversations the students of Confucius asked him a question."
"Why don't the master go and talk to the emperor as no one can speak so eloquently?”
Confucius smiled and said that the emperor himself makes lively and wonderful speeches.
The students not accepting the answer said, “Then both of you will have so much to talk about.”
Confucius took a moment and answered, “Wonderful speeches are nothing more than polish of techniques, they do not themselves contain any virtues.”
“What is the secret of virtue then master?”
“The knowledge on how to use mind, heart, discipline and emotion.”

The Virtue of Patience
Like me, you might have many moments when in hindsight realised that a little patience would have been a better solution on your part.
So what is patience?
We all know what we do when we lose our patience-we are annoyed, irritated and frustrated.
Patience is the ability to find the beauty of the moment.
The great thing about patience is that it can be acquired by deliberate practice.
Can you think of places where you can practice patience?
The more you use it deliberately, the more you can harness it.

How to be the REAL you?
1. Have solitude time. Spend time alone by yourself, e.g. taking a long walk, browsing books in the library, or even just having coffee by yourself.
2. Decide things for yourself. You must be aware of your choices and deliberately choose what you like to wear.
3. Be connected to your community. Participate in activities with your school and community centre. By working with others around your area, you will be able to define yourself.
4. Make a list of board games and sports that you enjoy and express yourself.
5. Read novels. It is the best way to figure out what it feels like to be someone else. Imaging so many characters is how your head will help define and distinguish the real you.

How do you want your brain to be wired?
Teenage years are the pruning down of cells and connections. Those connections that are being used will survive.
So if you as a teen, play sports, and work hard at school learning new stuff or play a musical instrument then all the cells and connections will be hard-wired for your adult hood. But if you are lazy, on the sofa always watching television or playing a video game repeatedly then those are the connections that are going to survive.
So how are you going to optimize your teenage brain?

Teenage Brain
Teenage Brain undergoes a radical re-development seen in the rest of the human body.
With the advent of brain scans (magnetic resonance imaging technology), the neuroscientist is able to study the living brain in the real time of an adolescent.
2 main changes
1. Growth of fatty insulation around the electrically charged neurons (the message-transmitting cells). This extra insulation increases the speed of transmission a hundred fold.
2. "Synaptic Pruning"- means in the early years of growth, the pruning back of critical connections or synapses that link neurons to one another.
Dr. Sarah Jayne Blakemore, a cognitive neuroscientist at university college London, says that teenagers are more self-reflective than prepubescent children.

Teenage Brain and Sleep
In a adult human brain, the body clock is on for about 16 hours a day. The body switches off for around 8 hours and we fall asleep.
With younger children the pattern varies by age. Babies sleep for nearly 12 hours but by 9 and 10 years they reach adult pattern of sleep.
Research shows that teenagers, till they reach 20 years old need 9 1/2 hours of sleep a night. (Dr. Mary A. Carskandon, of Brown University and EP. Bradley Hospital Providence, Rhode Island)
When your body clock switches off, the brain produces a hormone called melatonin that makes you sleepy.
If a teenager goes to bed late then they are having a short fall in their sleep requirement due to late homework and early school hours.
Is it really beneficial to sleep early as a teenager?
3000 Rhode Island teenagers were tested on their sleep habits. Those with most sleep got As and Bs and the rest got Cs and Ds.

Starting Fresh in the New Year
This is the time of the year when so many new things happen to you and you’re all excited. The question is, will that sense of curiosity and the will to do better this year be there day after day till the end of the year? Here are a few tips you can start doing so it becomes a habit, a second nature to you.
1. Look for details in all things that you do.
e.g.: a. Waiting for a bus to go to school - look at all the other students and see what school they are going to.
b. While in the bus, look at the route the bus driver is taking and ask yourself if there is a shorter route to school.
2. Don’t let fear stop you from trying something new. Try a new sport. Learn a new game. When you are curious about something new, it acts as a positive counter-weight to anxiety and fear.
3. Find you innate strength – how do you find out what you are really good at and how to discover and develop it because once you can do that, you will become passionate about things and you cant be but successful. This, I’ll share with you at a later date.
